Panel discussion "Energy Unplugged: Facing the Power of Future”
On August 29th we hosted an Info Day for our Beamline & Baltic Innovation Agency & Sparkup Tartu Science Park “Energy | Climate Focus” accelerator that will kickstart this autumn. This Batch will focus on energy, construction and climate resilience.
The hot topic of energy is booming at the moment and to discuss the challenges with real energy field experts, we put together the panel discussion "Energy Unplugged: Facing the Power of Future” with panellists:
Tanel Oppi (Environmental Investment Centre - KIK),
Ahto Oja (Eesti Biogaasi Assotsiatsioon),
Jaanus Uiga (Ministry of Climate) and,
Fabio Nicoló (Renewcast),
moderated by Rene Tõnnisson (BIA).
Here are some of the thoughts that particularly resonated from the panel discussion. Let's call them future trends & opportunities in energy, construction and climate resilience:
The energy sector needs to be clean and cleaner. Mega-trends include making clean energy more affordable and sustainability of materials.
The importance of thinking about the whole life cycle - from the production of materials to their end of life. The circular economy is key and the integrity of the process needs to be kept in mind.
In energy, backup and new solutions are the trends that are needed and it is a complex issue. The energy sector is complex and contains many opportunities - construction, new materials, and raising awareness among customers and architects.
Innovations in the energy sector, such as more efficient and affordable energy storage solutions, are key to integrating renewable energy. Green hydrogen, biogas and smart grid solutions are emerging!
There’s increasing demand for environmentally friendly building materials such as cross-laminated timber and recycled steel, and demand for high-quality wood-based materials, such as steel and wood fibre.
We need innovations that enable infrastructure to withstand extreme weather conditions, such as flood-resistant buildings and heat-resistant materials, which are becoming increasingly important.
All the panelists agreed that the importance lies in collaborations aka networks & partnerships: good network and strong partnerships are the key to fight climate change all together.
Big thanks to our partner in the program Laura Gredzens from the Environmental Investment Centre (KIK) for giving the opening words and emphasizing the importance of organizing such accelerator programs to support cleantech startups!
After the panel, program leads Jana Budkovskaja (Beamline) and Pirko Konsa (Sparkup Tartu Science Park) talked about all that the program has to offer to the startups.
